Pretty much everything. Trail was dry until about a mile in. There’s water running down a short section of the trail with ankle deep mud in parts. After that it’s pretty dry until about 2500 ft (consistently coniferous). From here, there was a section of inconsistent ice up until ~2700ft. And I’m pretty sure I heard a turkey out there. At some point I gave up putting on and taking off my microspikes. From there until 3000 ft there’s an icy monorail. From 3000ft and up it becomes a mix of hard packed snow and monorail with a ton of postholes/very uneven trail. About 3300ft it’s consistent hard pack over a layer of ice to the ridge. The ridge is doable with microspikes. My snowshoes took a ride. There are some sections of ice, but there are plenty of places to put your feet. South kinsman was relatively free of snow/ice. |
