Temperature was -9F when I left the trailhead at 820am. When I got to the summit of South Kinsman around 1030am the temperature was a balmy 17F. I measured a max wind speed of 2mph. With no wind and warm temps I was able to hang out at the summit for 15-20 minutes. Views were all the way to Jay Peak. Had the trail to myself for most of the day until I was headed down and I saw two ladies and one guy. It was a good day to be out.
I wore microspikes up until about the 3000 foot level and then I switched to snowshoes. There was a good bit of ice on the Mount Kinsman Trail but not enough to cause any problems. The Kinsman Ridge trail is in excellent condition. The ledges below North Kinsman were easily passed with no visible ice so traction was good.
Since I had been up the Kinsmans 5 times and never been to Bald Knob I decided to take the spur over to check it out. The trail was nicely packed with a lot of hidden ice. |
