| Comments: |
just a trace of snow low on the trail over frozen ground, ice and harpack. depth increased steadily with elevation with a few new inches up high. some hidden ice and a few flows along the way. once on the ridge snow depth was hard to gauge as it was blown around, but 6+ inches on average is a good estimate with numerous drifts over a foot. on my way out a number of people were heading up the ridge and mt. kinsman trail (some with and some without snowshoes) so expect a well packed track of some quality. snow coverage on the ridge is pretty good, but still pretty bony in the lower half of the mt. kinsman trail. i started in microspikes and switched to snowshoes probably half way between the bald know spur and the ridge. wore them a bit longer on the descent, but coverage is still to thin down low to wear them comfortably.
a nice though very cold day on the kinsmans. even though there wasn't a ton of new snow it was nice to finally get to do a bit of trail breaking. not much in the way of views while i was up there though i did get a brief view to an undercast franconia ridge. great to be out.
