Comments
Comments: Awesome day on the Osceolas. Started later (11:30) and the winds had died down significantly. Snowshoes door to door, and they are really needed. 8-12" of new powder up top, 6" towards the bottom. Very firm base underneath makes it tricky on the steeps as the powder just wants to slide in a mini avalanche. Passed a pair of snowshoers and eventually caught up to two guys at the chimney in full crampons. They were posting holing like crazy, at times up to their knees or higher I would guess. Good thing there is more snow incoming, or this trail would be in rough shape. I took the bypass on the way up, this snow was sticky and wet as it was getting direct sun. Easy ascent. I bushwhacked around on the return. There was no clear bypass to the bypass that I could see so I just went down until it seemed appropriate to go right. Untouched trail from the chimney to the Osceola Summit, but breaking trail wasn't too bad. Looked like some folks had come up from the Waterville side earlier in the day. The two snowshoers only went to the East peak, and they did a great job breaking out the trail, so the return trail from there was a delight, thanks guys! super fun butt sledding on the descent.
