Since the weather looked great for a high summit, I submitted a leave request at 6:00am and set out to complete my 47th W4K. Left Appalachia at 9am, a little later than I'd planned, but ok. A couple of inches of fresh snow were on the trail made snowshoes the right choice. Someone had bare-booted their way up the trail leaving a few postholes, but not too bad. Shoutout to another group of 3 hikers in snowshoes ahead of me who did a lot of trail breaking. This might not seem like a big deal with only a few inches of fresh powder, but when I passed them and did it myself I had to stop and rest a lot! Wore snowshoes up to Gulfside trail, then donned Hillsound microspikes for the climb to the summit. I was a little worried that the snow drifts ahead of me would cause post-holing, but all the way to the top the snow was firm and I could walk on the surface without breaking through. Summitted around 2pm and headed back down a few minutes later. Decided to take Valley Way down so re-donned the snowshoes for the descent at Madison Hut. Valley Way was broken out but still loose and unconsolidated. Took me 2 hours to get back to the car. I met a hiker while descending Adams who told me he took Howker Ridge trail up to Madison, so that trail is also broken out. |
