Conditions: Down low in the flats, the trail had a lot of bare stretches, with icy patches. By the time I got to the Tom Wiggen Trail Jct., the trail was all continuous ice. The crossing was running low. I opted for the birch tree to cross on. On the traverse up to the Rollins Jct., there was some bare areas, but mostly packed snow with underlying ice.
From the Rollins Jct to the summit, it was all hard packed snow. The huge ice bulge, near Camp Rich, is in true form again this winter. One may wish to whack around it. The cone scramble is filling in nicely.
Overall the trail is in great shape, with a few walk-arounds and step-overs. Fast track today, but that will change after tomorrows snow. Nice mild day today with no wind and a warm sun. I saw two others today on Dicey's Mill Trail. Rollins was broken and hard packed also. I wore an old pair of Hillsounds for the roadwalk and bare sections, then switched to my newer ones, for the upper packed snow areas. |
