a solid packed track all the way. thin snow over ice in the lower mile or so on rocky branch then generally snow the rest of the way with spotty coverage in spots just below the wilderness boundary.
the bushwack from the height of land was laid out quite nicely staying high and dropping you off just below crossings 3 and 4 which had their usual short bypass packed out.
we were in microspikes the whole hike given the hard packed track, but carried snowshoes and given the depth of snow at elevation (2+ feet on the ridge today) it's probably a smart call to have them along if for some reason you had to leave the packed track, had to follow a different route on the bushwack, etc.
nice day to hike isolation. some interesting views to the clouded presidentials and little wind on the summit. the birch glades along rocky branch ridge were beautiful as always. thanks to cynthia for a great day. |
