Peaks
Peaks South Carter Mountain, NH
Trails
Trails: Nineteen Mile Brook Trail, Carter Dome Trail, Carter-Moriah Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Sunday, January 8, 2012
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Plenty o' parking at 19 MBT trailhead.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular, Ice - Blue, Mud - Minor/Avoidable, Snow - Trace/Minimal Depth
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: The two major crossings on this route, one on the 19MBT and one on the CDT, are presently iced over and will hold weight, but unless some cold weather arrives soon both of these could get dicey due to thinning ice.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: There's one crawl-under blowdown at the 2,250-foot level on the 19MBT. Elsewhere, a couple of negligible step-overs.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: This is a great hike for dogs -- plenty of water, no icy, steep pitches -- with one caveat. Dogs that don't like ice won't like the route right now. There is a lot of blue ice, especially on the 19MBT. None of it is steep, but it's all tricky for dogs.

Lost and Found
Lost and Found: About a third of the way from Zeta Pass to South Carter on the Carter-Moriah Trail, we found a baseball-type Boston Fire Department cap. Inside was written "Kyrsten Blunt." Kyrsten, your hat is hanging out of harm's way on a tree next to the trail.

Comments
Comments: Really nice hike today with Polly in good weather -- #35 for her. There was a bit of a breeze on the ridge and at Zeta Pass, but nothing bothersome. The trails are fairly icy until the ridge, but barebooting isn't totally out of the question. I wore Hillsound trail spikes the whole way, but a French-Canadian group I met on the ridge was in snowshoes and having a nice time, looked like.

Near South Carter we met Little Brown Mushroom, who was doing a Wildcats-Carters traverse. Nice to see you again, Steve.
