| Comments: |
Gale River Road was icey in spots and we wore microspikes from the car.
The lower part of the trail was bare to minimal snow but we kept the spikes on. The stream crossings were icey and spikes would definitely be recommended. There was some good ice on the trail after the final stream crossing. Real snow levels were around 3000 feet, where snowshoes could have been used. We chose to leave them in the car. The trail was packed hard so we had no problems with postholing.
After the trail junction, Garfield Ridge was packed and slick. One put on crampons while the other stayed with the spikes. Neither of us had any problems.
We were measuring winds on top of Garfield at 20+ mph and windchills of -15F. Views were nil. Overall it was a good hike and it was nice to see some winter in the mountains. |
