Comments
Comments: OBP in good shape, used snowshoes all the way up past Greenleaf to the summit of Mt. Lafayette. I actually kept my MSR's on all day because it was so cold, but crampons could have been handy at certain points between Lafayette and Lincoln...just make sure your snowhoes have lots of traction. Winds were pretty strong, I'd estimate 40-50mph above the hut. You are basically walking on minimally compacted rime ice so with low visibility the trail would be difficult to follow above treeline. The same holds true on the ridge, winds were gusty and VERY gusty over near Little Haystack, I've never seen hard snow scoured out and then tossed over my prone body like that before..a fellow hiker who accompanied me along the ridge got taken off his feet and spun around at one point. The winds were mostly steady at 40mph but you never know when you might see hurricane force, it was an eye opener! Falling Waters in good shape going down, but would be more difficult going up due to some glissading.
