Trail is nicely compacted as far as Champney falls. Only needed spikes. Above that, I was breaking trail in snowshoes for most of the way, until the junction with Piper trail up to the treeline, which was semi-broken / post-holed. I stopped before attempting to get up to the final scramble to the summit, because it was too sketchy -- crusted snow over ice, no visible cairns or trail markers, and really would have required crampons to do successfully. Didn't matter though, because I still got the amazing views!
Slower going on the way down, as unfortunately barebooters had come up the Champney Falls trail behind me and post-holed the trail I'd broken. Hopefully some snowshowers will help further flatten and define that trail above the falls to the summit. |
