Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Thank you WODC for clearing all of the blowdowns in December! There is just one skinny little stepover (maybe 3” diameter) that is frozen in place but probably can be hauled off the trail when everything thaws. It is in the perpetually muddy spot (not muddy now LOL) on Dicey’s between the Wiggins junction and the water crossing.

Comments
Comments: Over the past few weeks I have seen a lot of people in full crampons, in places that I wouldn’t typically consider full crampons. Crawford Path by Gibbs Falls, and today on both Dicey’s and Blueberry. You could argue, I suppose, that full crampons could be useful on Blueberry but there wasn’t really any ice that you couldn’t avoid, and when I needed a crampon, my snowshoes were more than up to the task. The three crampon wearers on Blueberry Ledge were struggling to get up the steeps and did a lot of postholing on the trail. It was even more curious to see the pair of hikers on Dicey’s almost to the Rollins junction, postholing their way up the trail. All of these full crampon wearing hikers were carrying snowshoes. Am I missing something here? Is some outfitter recommending full crampons for all hiking all of a sudden? I love my full crampons but haven’t found a time that I needed to use them, yet this season.
I wore snowshoes the whole morning, except for the roadwalks. Snowshoes were perfect, in my opinion - though the track is laid, thanks to Capt Chris and his friends (thank you!) the snow is not consolidated. The ledges and the chimney have mostly snow and some spots took a bit of consideration to figure out but all were possible.
