Comments
Comments: A great day to hike this trail. Sunny, 20 degree start and good views. The winds died down midmorning as advertised which made for a comfortable hike all day. I expected more snow and drifting but it was minimal. The trail was mostly powder-covered packed snow and ice in some spots. The powder was generally about 1/2" to 1" except for the not so travelled Waldren trail on the back side of Passy. I barebooted up BBL for a 1.5 mile then put on microspikes for the icy granite slabs. The ledges were really challenging and a time and energy suck. Spikes were useless for the most difficult ledge that was bare slick granite. Not sure how doable they'll be in the near future. Snow depths picked up some on Rollins but I think I only went ankle deep twice. I put on snowshoes at the real Whiteface peak to try and knock down some of the boot divots in the trail. The whole loop could be done in spikes. I broke trail on Waldren, about 6" deep, and fortunately it was downhill. I barebooted out from the Tom Wiggin trail junction after the brook crossing.
