Comments
Comments: Well what an interesting day out.my orginal plan was for Washington but saw the hugh wind forecast and changed plans for a closer to home set of peaks. It was still quite windy on the ridge and I for sure got some rosey cheaks from it. The snow was fluffy going up whiteface. I put my spikes on at the rock slab as the ice was no game for my boots. The snow got deeper the higher you went. Once I got to the false summit which no one had gone to the tip top, I would say maybe 6” there. The snow was so fluffy snowshoes would have given a broken ankle. I then headed to the summit of whiteface which looking at foot traffic, most people never went. The snow was deeper but still with therocks hidden made for an interesting hike. Not much foot traffic for rollins trail. It got to about 10” of powdery snow. It was very odd. The snow got a little less once I got to dicey’s mill. I then met Ken and his friend and chatted a bit before heading up to Pass. That started to feel like I was walking in beach sand by that point. Talk about a full workout today. I made it to the summit and figure well at least it will be better going down. Wrong… more slick with the puffy snow. Then once I hit Rollims, I continued down Dicey’s and it looked like maybe only 2-3 people had gone up it. The snow was this hard crust which acted like terrible post holes…. Ankles were not happy afterthis at all as the snow did not get lower where the crust was not annoying til about 1mile from the car. I took my spikes off after atom Wiggin junction. I saw 9 people today, 3 heading up whiteface and saw them again on Pass, a single chick on Rollins, then a single guy, then 2 other guys other that the one I knew. The parking lot wad full when I got down and clearly ment many trails were hit today as they were not on the trails I was on. Hopefully more snow to come for snowshoes to fix this mess. Also 5-6 bear print crossings on the way down dicey’s mill!
