Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Sunday, July 23, 2023
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Parked on shoulder of Durand W Road; 2 other cars at 9:30, & more joined by 3:30 afternoon. 4 cars were parked at Lowes Store in the AM despite recent reports that this was no longer an option. It looks like all later arrivals simply parked on the shoulder of Rt 2 (5 cars present at 3:30).
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable, Mud - Significant
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Rock hops, but section of trail under power lines was completely under water (mostly) and it was difficult to get through w/o getting shoes wet; many other opportunities to get wet and muddy shoes on lower trails, as well.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Fabulous shape!!! One step over on Lowes, one duck under on Spur.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Cooper had a blast, as usual. There is so much running water on the lower trail for thirsty pups, but bring some for higher elevations & above treeline, where there is none. Plan on returning with a pretty muddy pup. There are numerous sections of the trails that are quite muddy, and I will presume that most pups do not always seek the least muddy route. One other pup on the trail today.
Bugs
Bugs: Blown away with brisk wind.

Comments
Comments: Took Lowes to the summit, then Spur to King to Lowes back down. Best choice, in my opinion, since Lowes seemed a bit steeper and there was more running water to content with. Thanks to wheresizzy for the recent report and recommendation. Stopped at all camps/cabins where non-filtered water is available. Also, stopped at all view points, stunning day. Water falls are flowing and nice stops to check out, as well. Trails are quite wet with many muddy sections, and many rocks and log bridges are covered in moss that can be slippery. I do not expect this to change much in the next couple of days.

If looking for a more quiet approach to Adams, this is the route. I saw 6 people on Lowes, and only 2 on my descent (the hut caretaker and friend hiking back up).
