Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Do not recommend taking the dirt access road to the actual trailhead. Park outside near the main road and walk the 0.2 miles to the trailhead. The access road has large rocks spewed haphazardly and for any vehicle with low clearance, you will most likely ruin the undercarriage of your vehicle. There were three LARGE pools of water on the road that were of undetermined depth but appeared deep. They took up the entire road so there was no way to go around them except by walking around them.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Mud - Significant
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Rock hopping the multiple water crossings (brook/stream and excessive ground water coming down the mountainside). Easily manageable although at least five crossings. One section of the trail had active running water down the rocks as you climbed.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: No significant blowdowns or any missing signs. Marked very well (AT white blazes). Lots of boggy areas with significant mud and standing water (at least 8 different areas), with many at least boot deep. Tested with pole as we hiked before placing boot and some areas the pole went in at least 12" deep into the muck. Only one area has a plank which is significantly disintegrated. All other bog areas do not have planks. Most have rocks, although widely spaced out…or in some sections, still completely submerged under inches of water. Other boggy areas have no rocks at all…so you are fully committing to losing a boot!
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes:
Bugs
Bugs: Left early and started by 8:15am. Bugs were almost non-existent on the way up. After reaching the ledges and turning around, the bugs were out in force. Flies, No-See-Ems, mosquitoes, etc. Followed the entire 3.6 miles back to the car. Even with bug spray they were relentless.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: Someone left a strap on a tree within a mile of the trailhead.

Comments
Comments: There were enough dry areas between the boggy areas to make up for the mud and water. It was an enjoyable hike except for having a boot go deep in one area of the nasty muck.
