Mt. Clinton Road open but icy. Jefferson Notch Road (US 302 side) technically open, but 4WD required - ice covered with 3-6" of snow. Snowmobile traffic on both roads. |

A rare chance to hike Jefferson via Caps Ridge in December.
Snow depths were 1-8 inches, generally about 2-3" though. Some deeper drifts in a few places above treeline. Some blue ice lurking underneath, but generally dry ledge underneath the snow. Microspikes were perfect. Crampons would have been detrimental today. Snowshoes not needed on this trail until a few more inches of snow.
Trail can be quite hard to follow, especially above the Caps, when everything is covered in rime. Our tracks are pretty much kosher, though they may drift in. |
