Comments
Comments: Headed out on this loop counterclockwise to get the long boring Livermore road walk done first! Fair amount of people for a Monday morning, most heading up to Tripyramids.
Saw a big turtle between north and south termini for the loop, and he was moving right along too! Livermore trail past the northern terminus for the Tri’s is a little low growth brushy in spots, and has a great worn footbed. Really enjoyed the approach to the first flat with the junction for Old Skidder trail. Old Skidder trail does not seem to have the potential overgrowth mentioned in the description, a pleasant surprise! Waterville Flume was GORGEous, flowing beautifully it was very spectacular! Continuing onto Irene’s Path I found the great stone steps mentioned in the guidebook, they have held up very well through the years (proper setting and cribbing!). Viewpoint looking out to the Osceolas and Mad River Notch is most excellent, worth the bugs trying to feast. There is a teaser view ledge just south of the Scaur, but the real deal is definitely where it’s at! Coming up the short spur trail I ran into the Mountain Wanderer himself, out for a morning of trailwork before heading to the shop. Enjoyed a quick chat and catch up, and then took my turn eating lunch on the ledges. Even with the smokey haze it is still a spectacular spot. Kettles were cool, and the trail itself in good shape until the last tenth of a mile where water runoff has made the trail its home.
I would do this loop exactly this way a hundred times over, it was beautiful and felt pretty practical for elevation gains!
