Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Nice parking area off Dundee Road in Jackson. If you wish to ascend Doublehead via the New Path, then you must walk up Dundee Road to reach the trailhead (signed) that has a bit of new vegetative growth at the entrance.

Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Mud - Significant

Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: All waterways are relatively insignificant. However, on the Doublehead Ski Trail there is a tangle of waterways running down, across, and back and forth across the trail. The water is not deep but these stretches of trail are wet and muddy.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: No obstructions on the trail. Good signage. Some additional drainage ditches may help alleviate the impact of the water flowing onto the trail.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Fine for dogs.
Bugs
Bugs: A few. Not too bothersome.

Comments
Comments: I prefer to ascend via the New Path because it is steep with somewhat poor footing in places. The New Path is mostly dry except for a bit of mud near the start and one short spot of wet slippery ledge (not difficult). The New Path and Old Path on the Doublehead ridge/col was mostly easy going. I descended from North Doublehead on the Doublehead Ski Trail since I had never hiked the section of this trail above the lower junction with the Old Path. The upper section of the Doublehead Ski Trail was mostly dry with gentle to moderate grades. The lower section of the Doublehead Ski Trail extending from a point above the lower junction with the Old Path down to the trailhead has lots of water and mud.
There are multiple viewpoints on this route. The best is a westerly view from ledges just off the New Path between the two peaks. Unfortunately, the cloudiness restricted the views today. Even still, I could see Stairs Mtn, the bottom of Carter Notch, Moat Mtn, Mountain Pond, The Twins, and Pleasant Mountain in ME.
A fair number of hikers out today including one dog. Some colorful mushrooms but no wildflowers.
The North Doublehead cabin was all locked up today.
