Trails
Trails: Black Mountain Ski Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Saturday, July 8, 2023
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Large lot. Road continues, but is chained as it functions as a driveway to two homes. You may walk to the trail head on it, however.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet Trail, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: A few rock hops, the rest were small step overs.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Very good! Informative kiosk at trailhead; in addition to the usual info, it also gives the etiquette for ski trails.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Forest service rules: All dogs must be leashed. Plenty of water until you get to the Forest Protection sign, so make sure you have some for them for the higher part of the trail. There are grassy areas, so check for ticks.
Bugs
Bugs: Nothing biting, but I did pick up a few ticks (brushed them off before they had a chance to latch on). Many beautiful butterflies.

Comments
Comments: Not long mileage wise, but a lot of elevation in sections. Very mucky in some spots and running water on the trail. Not a big deal, though. Gorgeous dark woods for the most part (the reason many Black Mountains are named that, and there are several more that are trail-less in the Whites). Pretty wildflowers and grass near the cabin. We met a dog and her couple who were staying there (you can rent it from the Forest Service, just like nearby Doublehead). Not much of a view anymore, but you can see a little bit more from the trail a few hundred yards up from the cabin. Good choice for an iffy weather day. Thundered frequently, but no lightening until right before my last water-crossing back to the car (glad I lived to tell you all how nice the place is). Rain started after we drove off.
