Date of Hike: Wednesday, December 14, 2011
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: My car was the only one at Willey House.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Ice - Black, Ice - Blue, Ice - Breakable Crust, Snow - Trace/Minimal Depth
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Step overs. Kedron Flume ice on sides of flowing water might not hold, but branches upstream with ice work. Microspikes helpful.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Kedron Flume had some minor stems across the trail and one aligned with it but it's no big deal. One knee high blowdown across trail on EP or WR. I forget. The Willey stairs had crusty snow & ice but they weren't a problem, although using microspikes made them easier.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Pepper found it easy going with minimal snow, no wind and mild temps. The stairs on Willey were no problem for him up or down.

Comments
Comments: Snow of 1-2", maybe 3" at Willey, to the sides of the trails which paths had been booted down, or turned to crust or ice except for some running water in places. I put microspikes on at Kedron Flume crossing for the ice and pretty much kept them on thereafter. The trails were almost as fast as summer when in the microspikes. But with care barebooting up would probably work but be slower; going down could be much slower in places to avoid a slip/fall. Today's forecast was off but better than the very erroneous ones preceding it days before. Lt. snow all morning amidst a very low cloud ceiling and no views; in the pm the snow stopped and the clouds in places lifted just a little; all peaks were hidden all day.

I thought we could do Willey and then when the peaks cleared for the afternoon as forecast go do Lincoln & Lafayette, but instead we had to just pop up Jackson. We saw no one, so Pepper had a ball running free on the trails. Temps were mild, there was no wind, and it just felt good to move fast and free on the trails, far away from the computers. The woods were lovely, dark and deep.
