Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Definitely running higher in the morning due to overnight/early morning rain. Rock-hoppable for an adult but not a five-year old so we just walked through them in our trail runners. Was chilly in the AM but felt great at the end of the day.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: nothing new to add to Rocket21’s report yesterday. (Lots of erosion, some failing water bars, a few blowdowns, etc. )
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Nothing too difficult for a hiking dog on these trails. Some steeps on Avalon and a few rock scrambles. Watched Fin completely mangle a scramble for the first time in her 9.5 years. she went left instead of right down the steep scramble coming off Field towards Willey and got stuck in a large shrub on top of a boulder with big drop offs surrounding her. Jumped /fell out 7+ feet straight down and somehow didn’t hurt herself. Watched it unfold in slow motion terror and it took long enough to unfold that I had already started thinking about the ensuing pack-a-paw carry out. Scariest moment since she almost slid to death on the icy Resolution ledges and nearly got swept down the Zealand River. She must be part-cat or something with all these lives.
Bugs
Bugs: Black flies appeared on Avalon Summit and were periodically between mild and extremely annoying/bug net level for the rest of the day

Comments
Comments: Was hoping the trails as reported wet yesterday would dry up a bit overnight but it was apparent they had some solid rain last night or early this morning. hadn’t been up Avalon in 8 years-Margaret and I both really enjoyed the super steep climb. Views were grand but haziest I have experienced yet due to the fires. As reported recently the Mt. Tom view Spur almost isn’t worth the short walk over anymore as it is very grown-up. The A-Z trail is really beautiful we both loved that trail-last time we were on it was Feb. 2020 and I carried her up with snowshoes-much easier this time:) Saw about a dozen hikers today, the last of whom were a couple youngsters smokin the reefer at the crossing just above the Avalon intersection. I gave them a cold, hard stare, then laughed and said I was jealous and kept moving.
