Hancock Notch Trail is mostly dry and in great shape. Cedar Brook Trail and Hancock Loop trail to the base of North Hancock had wet and muddy spots that were easily avoidable. There was running water on the trail in spots that was also avoidable. The ascent up North Hancock was mostly clear of snow and ice. Did not use spikes and did not hit snow until near the summit. There was still deep packed snow throughout the traverse from North Hancock to South. Most was stable and I did not posthole. I did not need spikes for this section either. The descent down South Hancock was extremely challenging. The steep trail is covered with snow and ice for 2/3 of the descent. Poles and spikes are still required. I saw unprepared hikers going up North Hancock in sneakers, not sure how they would possibly make it down South Hancock in these conditions. Overall, a great day and the trail is in satisfactory condition. |
