Hiking Trail Conditions Report
Peaks
Peaks Mt. Carrigain, NH
Trails
Trails: Signal Ridge Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Wednesday, May 17, 2023
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Was pleasantly surprised to find Sawyer River Rd ungated and open for the season. Not a bad way to grid out Carrigain. :)
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Snow/Ice - Monorail (Stable), Snow/Ice - Monorail (Unstable), Snow/Ice - Small Patches
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: All easy, water levels are currently low. Took the shortcut on the way out (dipped toe 1" on one rock but nbd), and the long cut on the way back (danced across downed logs and rocks, all well above water line.)
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Lots of blowdowns, sporadic along the base sections, then a cluster just before the ridge opening, and another cluster between the ridge and final summit ascent. I pulled a few out of the way, but lacking any real cutting implements I was unable to help much. Most are resulting in herd paths. Bring saws. Lots of saws.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Saw one dog, doing fine on the remaining snowpack.
Bugs
Bugs: None today, but the constant flurries foreshadow a day soon when it'll be bugs wafting through the air and not snow pellets.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: Found and removed some trash.

Comments
Comments: Brisk but nice day for Carrigain and my #12. Barebooted to the summit, then donned rock spikes for the descent until about 3700'. Patchy snow starts around 3400' and becomes more or less continuous starting around 3800'. The monorail is hard and supportive at the moment but narrow. It snowed (flurried) all day, with summit temps around 24° F. No real new snow accumulation as of my hike down, but there is definitely some glare ice in the upper sections from freeze/thaw which is partially concealed with the fresh trace snow. As noted above, there were lots of blowdowns, many at the upper elevations looking fresh from a recent wind event..? They weren't there a month ago. PS Hooray for road openings!
