Big day with my buddies Willpower and Muscle Memory. Barebooted from Gale River TH to Galehead summit and back down to the hut. Monorail starts at 3400' on the Gale River trail and continues intermittently on the Garfield Ridge Trail. Put on trail crampons at 4200'on the Twinway and kept them on out to North Twin, back to South Twin, down to the hut, and back down to 3400' on the Gale River trail. Didn't see another hiker all day. Monorail up to South Twin and North Twin was supportive. Best conditions one could hope for. The trail between South Twin and North Twin is pretty hard to follow if you don't know where it runs and you're not well versed in reading monorail. The snow between the peaks is covered with spruce "leaves" making it hard to discern where the trail is, versus the snow in between the trees. Still lots of snow between South and North Twin - between 2 and 3 feet deep. |
