Haystack Road is still not open. Parked one car at Seven Dwarfs Motel, and the other at the Gale river trail head (road is open). Had no problems getting to the galehead hut. Spikes went on at the junction to Garfield ridge trail. Hut is open for self service, got some yummy cookies and water is turned on outside. Very little snow up to galehead, rock spikes were good. Up to south twin was not as bad as we expected. We wore K10s and they worked very well on the ice and narrow monorail. Dry rocks on the top of south twin. Kept the k10s on to north twin which was also not as bad as expected. There was sliding and postholing but we were prepared for worse. Much of the same past north twin summit so kept the k10s on for the descent. Little river was not rock hopable (which is why we saved it for last). We found the tree bridge which had eluded me many times previously but we found it and crossed without issue. Dry feet after all! Not really tho. Really amazing day out there! Saw about 20 other hikers. Congrats to Sara on finishing her 2nd round! |
