Comments
Comments: Dry trail up to and past Mt Surprise. Easy going, great conditions. The patchy, collapsing monorail starts to show up around the 3.1mi mark (on my recording) but doesn't become unavoidable until 3.5 miles in. I barebooted to the top and was slipping and sliding the last 0.5 miles. Sunshine put on his spikes when the snow got unavoidable and had an easy time of it thereafter. I learned my lesson and spiked up for the descent. Much easier. Saw another group descending all in spikes. I lugged up snowshoes, but they're definitely unneeded at this point. Coming down in early afternoon, the monorail was getting soft and even with spikes it was slick. Also, if you stray from the monorail there's still the opportunity to posthole pretty deep and get some wet boots, trust me. The rock faces of the trail were all dry.

A hungry little gray jay at the top, and clear views all the way to Washington.
