Trails
Trails: Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail, Crawford Path, Monroe Loop, bushwhacks, Cog Rail Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Sunday, May 7, 2023
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Busy, but spots open at Ammo TH. Started late. Bathrooms open & in good condition. Plenty of parking at cog
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable, Snow/Ice - Monorail (Unstable), Snow/Ice - Postholes, Slush
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes, Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Not too bad. Logs & slightly submerged rock hopping made for quick crossings. Steep inclines on ammo on middle crossings could get a bit sketch if snow chunks start to break off near stream bank.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Please, more cairns or other winter trail markings around LOTC hut on Ammo for deep snow. Second time in 3 weeks I’ve observed the snow track herd path going off trail. This forces decision to look at gps track on phone constantly or backtrack. Neither is reasonable expectation when pushing to hut near top of trail. I know a primary maintenance goal is to avoid damaging alpine Veg. Non-issue when snow levels recede.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Saw 2 ladies somehow bareboot down Ammo w/dogs on leash?! Snow loving doggies def will have fun up there.
Bugs
Bugs: No biting today. A few cool ladybugs & beetles crawling around on snow
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: Grey women’s gloves (head brand) found near cog visitor center. Left them on door at cog parking fee taker house

Comments
Comments: Windy day with 50-60 mph registered by MWOBS when at summit. Strategic use of buildings treated us to a nice wind break time at LOTC & Wash summit. Hot when sun was out on snow. Bareboot or microspikes all day. Nice amount of snow near summits to limit tedious walking over jagged rocks. Significant posthole fest going down cog. Snowshoes would be a choice if one wanted to hump them majority of day. So no one wearing them. Saw many skiers & conditions looked pretty schweet for them!
