Wow, melt is in effect here. After seeing monorail starting pretty low on Kinsmans Thursday and the report yesterday from some fellow gridders, I expected to put the spikes on below the spring spur @3400'. Instead I got my first no spikes nation summit of the year as I barebooted up over the summit of Starr King, wow that was a nice surprise. Spikes on for the out and back to Waumbek summit, the ridge is a mixed bag of dry and wet trail, mud, slush, and both stable and remnant monorail. I put my spikes back on to navigate some monorail patches from the summit of Starr King down the chimney and around the corner down to 3800'. Easily avoidable patchy monorail down to 3500' and a few random patches down to 3200'. No crossings and minimal monorail, a spring home run peak choice for tomorrow |
