Uneventful trip out Zealand Road and up Hale this morning. The two water crossings were easily rock hopped. Microspikes went on immediately after the second crossing (around 3000’) and stayed on until the same place on descent, more or less. Some patches of ice started around 2600’, but were easily avoided. Once the spikes went on, we had to tightrope walk the thin monorail lest we slide off into a posthole or create one ourselves. There was trace-2’ of new snow above 3000’ so we had the melting snow raining on us, some botting on the microspikes, and a somewhat tricky time locating the thin monorail. Carried snowshoes, but didn’t use them and I think it would have been tougher with them on.
On the way out, we followed the signs to Wildlife Pond (across from the Sugarloaf Trailhead) and spotted a moose! There is a short section of flooded trail before the pond, so prepare for wet feet or wear gortex. |
