Late start waiting for weather to clear today but was worth it for the blue skies. Polecat trail still has packed snow bottom to top. Sunblock not optional, reflection off snow and no shade top to bottom especially on the way down can lead to big time sun burn. Heading up I followed someone's tracks for mostly firm snow. Heading down it was soft with boilerplate below. I stuck to the recent snowcat tracks as the I needed a bit more traction to stay in control.
This is a hard to beat mud season hike, views top to bottom and any hiker impacts is dwarfed by the damage done by the ski area. In a few spots I saw some recent attempts to taming trail erosion off the sides of the trails, it will be interesting to see once the snow melts, how extensive these attempts are. |
