Comments
Comments: Planned for all Carters, but only managed Carter Dome because of the trail conditions. 19 mi is ok barebooting. By the end of the day much snow was either gone, or just a thin monorail left. Zeta Pass and the ridge were horrible. Snowshoes 100% needed, but even then they only help so much. The trail is deteriorating badly. The monorail is existent just enough for half of a foot, where the rest is slipping and sliding all over the place. I don’t know how many times I postholed with snowshoes up to thigh, but it’d be way worse without them. Surprised to not have any twisted ankles or broken bones. The brook crossings on Zera Pass were hoppable, but definitely looked fuller on the way back. On the last big crossing the bridge was still there, but didn’t look like it’s holding for much longer. Very slow going, took me 9.5 hours to get to Carter Dome and back, normally I’m quite a bit faster. The conditions were also changing rapidly throughout the day, the trail looked much softer and unstable on the way back. Honestly, I’d wait out for a couple weeks until most of the snow is gone.
