We did North to South. Beautiful, sunny day. Warm (in the 40's/50's) so soft surface conditions. Spikes all the way but snowshoes might have worked. Hard to say because after the loop, the North peak trail is VERY steep and with soft snow, snowshoes, even with televators, might have had a hard time getting and keeping a good bite. We pretty much jogged on the flats but slowed WAY down on the climb leveraging many of the postholes as steps so we could continue to advance upwards. Trail markings from North to Middle & South were fairly non-existent and following footprints wasn't reliable-- we ended up bushwhacking several times to reacquire the trail. Descent down South Hancock was pretty steep for about 30 minutes. Tried some butt sliding but don't advise due to the steepness of the trail. The trail never flattens so once you pick up speed, your only option is to run into a tree. AllTrails clocked us in at 9.9 miles, 5 hours, 29 min./mile. We had a nice lunch at the top. Started at 9:30, ended at 4 so 6.5 hours for us. |
