Lower Glencliff was melting out with more consistent cover starting at about 2000'. Above, Glencliff Trail and the Carriage Road to timberline were choppy and postholed but firm and supportive, softening up only on the surface in the sun on our descent. Carriage Road was beginning to show signs of the tightrope walk monorail that forms there in good snow years. Above treeline, the Carriage Road had soft ice between the scree walls, allowing us to wear spikes to the summit. Spur trail to South Peak had a firm track. Snowshoes went for a ride today, as we spiked from the start of the snow cover to the summit and back. While it was all good today, it won't take much sun and warmth to compromise the favorable conditions we encountered.
Lovely hike with Chris, Sarah and Michael. We were able to hang at the summit for an hour in comfort. |
