The below-treeline parts of Air Line and Valley Way were hardpacked and solid right from the get-go. Some monorail on the steep upper part of Valley Way as well. Above treeline, the trails had some scattered areas of ice and frozen snow, but a good amount of the time, they were dry and snow/ice free. My snowshoes and crampons got a free ride today- I wore light traction (microspikes) the entire hike. With the incoming warm spell though, you'll definitely want snowshoes, as the trails will get quite soft.
It was a crystal clear day up on Mount Adams with barely any clouds and views for days, but it was also very windy- wind speeds were around 55-70 mph for almost the entire time I was above treeline, which made just standing upright a chore at times, particularly on the dry, exposed rocky sections of Air Line. I had the entire ascent as well as the summit of Adams to myself, and saw about a dozen or so people on my hike down. |
