A mixed bag out there. Wore spikes on 19 Mile for first 1/2 mile or so, then switched to shoes for stability for the rest of the journey. Squishy in places, but mostly frozen, hard packed snow. Lots of postholes & melt/freeze undulations. After Zeta Pass, a vague monorail is starting to appear, esp. heading up toward S. Carter. I lost the narrative 1/2 way there and wandered around for a while, eventually rejoining the trail just south of the summit. Lots of herd paths leading off in wrong directions. Still winter up there - not time to put the snowshoes away yet. |
