Comments
Comments: Rocky Branch Trail was barely supportive in the early morning so spikes worked ok. It's starting to monorail and some bare patches and rocks are starting to show near the trailhead. By afternoon, the steep beginning two mile section had softened so snowshoes worked best to avoid post holing the trail. Temps hear freezing kept the bushwacks relatively firm so spikes were fine as long as you kept to the center of the track. Step near the edge of the track and you'll post hole a foot or more.
This was probably the last good day for spikes. With rising temps, this trail will soften and won't support boots/spikes. You'll definitely need snowshoes going forward unless you enjoy post holing with every step and destroying the trail. Just saying...
