 | Parking/Access Road Notes: |
York Pond Rd is in good shape. Three cars were able to fit in the cleared area beside the TH. One other car parked on the road. |
|
 | Surface Conditions: |
Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular, Snow - Wet/Sticky |
|
 | Recommended Equipment: |
Snowshoes, Light Traction |
|
 | Water Crossing Notes: |
The many small water crossings were somewhat challenging due to the amount of snow on either side, creating a steep incline to the water and back up the other side. Using poles helped. |
|
 | Trail Maintenance Notes: |
A couple of duck-unders that were not bothersome. |
|
 | Dog-Related Notes: |
None today. |
|
 | Bugs: |
Zero, although it seemed warm enough for them. |
|
 | Lost and Found: |
Nothing. |

 | Comments: |
We started in spikes in the morning when the trail was firm. They worked well until just above the cabin. At that point, the soft snow balled up under them so we switched to snowshoes. From the cabin to the summit, the trail is soft and less consolidated. The blazing on this section is much better than the last time I was here. On the descent, we removed the snowshoes at the ledge overlook and barebooted the rest of the way down. Today none of the traction worked great all day, so it was a matter of what worked best as the sun warmed up the snow. It was quite mushy by 1:00. Due to the high snow pack, there is a wonderful view from the old tower site. We were delighted to find an unexpected view of the Presidentials from the summit area, as well as a peek at the top of snow-covered Franconia Ridge. Blue skies, warm sunshine, and no wind made for a lovely day with Renee, Gregg, Sarah, and Michael. |
