Upper Honeymoon (snowmobile/mixed use), bushwhack
It was evident that snowmobiles had not come through recently, lots of snowshoe traffic. Great, solidly packed surface, not icy at all, very pleasant.
Departed trail to surprisingly very solid snowpack, 6-10" at ~2,000' which increased to 3-4' at higher elevations. Ascended from the southwest and found a few wickedly steep pitches, chutes next to 40-50' slabs of bare rock, luckily the snow was solid and took the snowshoe crampon points well, had my ice axe as usual and put it to use just to be safer.
Lots and lots of blowdown patches at various elevations; woods were lovely and open down low, thicker in sections, terribly grotesque nearing the climb up West Deception (I managed to avoid on the descent by hanging north), back to nice, open woods for the final climb to West. From West to East (main Deception peak) the forest was a dream, back to open and solidly packed, good timing was made. Loads of blowdown nearing the high point, recent moose activity and bedding on the way over to the ledgy spot with great views from northern presi's to Bretton Woods ski resort. I had a bit of cloud lingering - nothing like the Presidential Range, they were totally socked in.

Happy Climbing! |
