Great morning on the Hancocks today. The trail is very solid with a nice, wide snowshoe track. Any type of traction worked today. We wore spikes for the bulk of the hike, snowshoes up North for the televators and across the ridge (because I’m too lazy to switch), then Grivel G-10 crampons to descend South because I like to stroll down the steeps instead of slide/ski. Snow hadn’t started when we were there, but if the storm dumps 4-8” as predicted, you’ll want snowshoes.
The track up on the ridge meanders a bit (you could see many places where unfortunate hikers located spruce traps in the warmer weather from earlier in the week). Be careful if you venture through the ridge next week without snowshoes as those postholes on the spruce traps are very deep and dangerous. |
