I originally planned to start in showshoes, and then a friend who did this route yesterday confirmed that starting bare boot or spikes would be fine. I usually do not like to change out traction, so thought about starting in shoes anyway...but with the cold temps and the report that I received, I thought maybe spikes would be fine for the entire out and back (rolling the dice here, because typically I would expect to need my shoes on the ridge based on the recent weather, and Saturday's conditions). I started in spikes and carried the shoes on my pack. The trail was packed solid the entire way, and the shoes went for a ride today! Trail conditions were sweet! Crossed paths with about 7 others, most in snowshoes, one in spikes, and on my final descent there was a group of about 8 and I believe they were all in spikes. |
