Valley Way from trailhead to Madison Hut was fully broken out. First mile of Valley Way was wet/sticky from the warming temps. While the trail was broken out, snowshoes were essential - the snow was too soft and loose to stay packed and avoid postholing. There were some significant postholes to the sides of the main path, but they were largely avoidable. Gulfside to the summit was a mix of ice-encrusted hard pack, 4-5" powder, and much deeper but avoidable drifts. Snowshoes from trailhead to summit worked great, I'd contemplated crampons for the descent, but found the snowshoes were sufficient. |
