Base started out sorta firm in the early AM, but quickly softened as temps rose and especially as we gained elevation. Lots of snow out there in the woods! There was a good track laid out, but the snow was still very soft and loose. We started in spikes, but switched to snowshoes after a couple miles, and this was definitely the way to go. Snowshoes stayed on for the rest of the day and made travel so much more efficient. Great to see most other folks in snowshoes today too. Ran into a nice group of students from Gould Academy out on an "expedition trip" camping and hiking, a couple of ladies headed up to stay in the cabin overnite, and a woman celebrating her NH48 finish - just a great day to be out! Please wear your snowshoes out there right now - it really will make your travels (and everyone else after you) so much easier! |
