Feb 28 -hiked into Carter Notch Hut, only us two for a lovely dinner with the hut attendant and restful sleep. March 1--> What a day- 7.75-hrs start to finish. 9am start from Hut - no wind and sunny. Due to tons of snow yesterday and overnight, plus snowdrifts and STEP terrain, my friend and I did not summit WC-A till 12:15pm. Not for the faint of heart, we would have bailed if grey and windy. With 12+inches of new snow (21" reported at Wildcat Ski Area) & high winds which created groin to chest deep drifts, trees were covered with snow so hard to see blazes. An animal (marten? hare?) led us all the way to Wildcat B, identifying turns in trail we could not id, esp the major left up to Wildcat A. Arrived at Wildcat D chairlift by 3pm. If you're breaking trail, be prepared for a longer and steeper, than desired, finale to Wildcat D. Took an hour to descend to WC ski area parking lot on groomed Polecat Trail. Hitched a ride back to 19 mile trailhead parking lot. EPIC DAY! Couldn't have broken trail all that way with my positive hiking-partner, hydration & food breaks, sun/no wind, and humility after finishing reading Ty Gagne's Last Traverse. |
