A few stream crossings. Some partially frozen over, but the ice was not entirely stable. Some not frozen over, so of course our dog chose to walk in them. |

| Dog-Related Notes: |
We took our two husky-mixes, who managed the trail conditions fine. Our one dog decided not only to walk in the streams but to frolick around in the water, and then her feet got cold when we were doing stop-and-go hiking up the steep sections. Our other dog was much more rational about the stream crossings, but got more ice balls in her paws. We ended up turning around with the dogs to be safe and the rest of our party continued to North Tripyramid. Would be fine for dogs who (1) understand how water's phase changes work and (2) either don't get ice balls in their paws or are willing to wear booties. |

| Comments: |
6-8 inches of fresh powder (more than that higher up) on top of firm snowpack/light crust. Fine in snowshoes (with traction to go up the steep parts, and even then we were on all fours). Microspikes will get you up the mountain but you'll occasionally posthole and your shins will be very unhappy about the hard crust layer beneath the powder. Ouch. [and ruin the trail for those who follow]. On the plus side, the last time we hiked this trail I concussed myself by butt-sliding into a tree, which we managed to avoid this time. The tree and I have since settled our differences. (Don't worry, it's still standing.) |
