Comments
Comments: Beautiful day above treeline. Very low wind speed and bright sunshine. Met lots of friends along the way. Valley Way is packed hard with some minor drifting above the Alpine Zone warning sign. Gulfside is icy with frozen snow and some powder in the bushes above Madison Hut. More frozen snow higher up on Gulfside and then on Airline to the summit. We wore trail crampons from Appalachia to the summit of Adams, switching to full crampons for the descent to the hut. Osgood to the summit of Madison is much icier w/frozen snow. We kept full crampons on to the summit of Madison and back down to the hut and then to just below Valley Way campsite, where we switched back to trail crampons. One member of our party did the entire hike in Trail Crampons, but the rest of us put full crampons to good use and much surer footing. I'd recommend carrying both.
