Comments
Comments: we took the scenic route. microspikes worn by all. saw a few carrying snowshoes. a few drifty spots around the lake/ponds. There are 4 significant icy patches on FJ. The 4th was the toughest for me. I made it in micros, but did switch to Hillsound pro trail crampons, coming off of North Kinsman for the icy steep. kept them on until low on Kinsman Pond before switching back to micros, because the bindings were hurting my feet. While there were plenty of people out enjoying the day, we had the summit of South Kinsman all to ourselves. (winds were light). It appears that many hikers think the outlook on the north knob of South Kinsman is the summit when they actually have .10m to go. From the cairn chair, I could see a group of hikers standing over there and then turn around. Oops. On the decent I chose to avoid the ice and we came down Kinsman Pond, walking the edge of the pond itself. Kinsman Pond is choppy. Maybe broken out weeks ago, by a snowshoer, but not what you would call a packed trail by any means. But since it sees so little traffic, we managed just fine. LL is a sidewalk.
