We wore snowshoes car to car and it was definitely the right choice. Livermore Road is groomed for XC skiing for 2 miles from the parking, so you should have snowshoes there [required per signs]. The Tripyramid Loop Trail up the south slide required snowshoes as it was very soft and unconsolidated. Once up on South Tripyramid, the trail was completely blown in and virtually no track was discernible until reaching Middle. I may have wandered off course in a few places, but never backtracked. There were four others in snowshoes behind us, so the track is probably set now such as it is. From Middle to North and then down Pine Bend Brook was hard packed and spikes would be appropriate here. We encountered two young men who had come up the North Slide and said the snow conditions were really good. They had ice axes, but thought it could be done with trekking poles. They continued on to South and descended the south slide. I don’t think they had snowshoes, so I assume that the trail from Middle to South as well as the lower part of the Tripyramid Loop is now postholed badly. We descended on Scaur Trail which was very, very soft and got worse as the day went on. Back onto Livermore Road, but further up where it’s not groomed for skiing. It was a bit of a slog to get back to the groomed section. After that, smooth sailing with many skiers out enjoying the day. |
