Comments
Comments: While sunny driving up the Kanc, the Kinsman’s were in the clouds all day so sadly no views. Going up to the hut, the trail is well packed with a number of exposed rocks, so spikes were the best. Made it up Fishin’ Jimmy with spikes, but many icy spots and crampons would have been a reasonable choice. Snowshoes on Kinsman Ridge seemed ideal to me, but I met a number of people using spikes. I considered going down Fishin’ Jimmy with my crampons but decided it would be safer and more fun to continue across the Cannonballs. Kinsman Ridge Trail has seen little use, but was easy to follow and a pleasant snowshoe in 2-4 inches of fresh snow over crust. A few icy spots on the steeper sections, but not bad. The trail became well packed at Northeast Cannonball (seems people are “bagging” it from Coppermine Col), so descent was easy, too. Unfortunately, a rocky/bare stretch on Lonesome Lake Trail about halfway down to the lake ended my snowshoeing and it was spikes on well packed trail down to the parking lot.
