Comments
Comments: Outstanding blue sky day up there looking down at the ocean of undercast below, lapping at the western edges of the presi ridge. Trail conditions on Ammo excellent, well packed. I wore micro spikes on the lower portion, changed to snowshoes on the steep portion coming up and out of the ravine to the hut --televators at their best. Monroe was icy and windblasted from the southwest. People did fine with micro spikes and snowshoes but for one little tricky bit I put on the crampons, to properly include them in the day's fun, then I kept them on the rest of the day they worked so well. Path over to Washington partly obscured by drifting and wind packed snow, nothing deep. The summit cone also wind blasted this afternoon, ground blizzard threatened to vanish away my return path cairns and made my eyes tear even under goggles, getting worse with every bit of elevation...so I turned back once I reached almost-touching distance of the cell tower. For my purposes today, that counted as summit. Lovely trip down as I dipped below the summit blizzard. Nice to have the crampons going down the steeps on Ammo, smoothed and packed due to butt-sliding users. Perhaps they have buns of steel: snow cover is not real deep yet!
